Simon Willis, CEO de Young Foundation, tratará de darnos respuesta y suscitar debate en torno a las siguientes preguntas ¿Puede la innovación social dar respuesta a nuestros mayores retos? ¿Tiene la innovación social el poder suficiente para tratar con la complejidad y la dimensión de los grandes retos que afrontamos, la creciente desigualdad hasta niveles extremos, el cambio climático, unos niveles insostenibles de deuda, la financiación y la inestabilidad económica? ¿Nos hemos centrado demasiado en las innovaciones sociales incrementales y hemos descuidado las más radicales o disruptivas?
Simon Willis, a lo largo de los años, también ha trabajado estrechamente con numerosos gobiernos sobre el compromiso ciudadano y las estrategias de innovación abierta a gran escala. Dirigió un grupo de innovación social en Cisco Systems y ha impulsado varias organizaciones no lucrativas, algunas de ellas centradas en la sostenibilidad urbana y la innovación social.

Cities have moved to the centre of the policy agenda in Canada. There are good and bad reasons for this. On the positive side, Canadian cities seem better than any other level of government at spurring citizen engagement, harnessing technological innovation and devising creative responses to problems. Proposals for creative cities, smart cities, green cities, sustainable cities and wired cities represent bold new thinking which often seems lacking at the provincial or federal levels. In countries where national governments often seem paralyzed, cities are busy inventing the future. Polls show that Canadians identify more with their cities than with the nation as a whole.

On the negative side, key Canadian cities have faced major crises of governance in recent years. From the media spectacle of Toronto’s City Hall through the string of corruption scandals in Montreal, we wonder how cities will get the governments they need or deserve. Canada’s constitutional arrangements give provinces ultimate control over the status of cities, with effects that many deride but no one seems able to change.The Cities We Need conference will look at the ways in which cities are reinventing themselves and, in turn, reinventing what it means to be Canadian. What can we do to make our cities more equitable, sustainable and participatory?
